Vonage SMS Gateway for WordPress

Vonage, the network formerly sold as Nexmo, is one of the stronger choices for WordPress sites with an audience outside North America. Direct carrier relationships across Europe and Asia mean fewer hops between your site and the handset, and fewer hops usually means better delivery.

Why teams pick Vonage

  • Direct carrier routes in a lot of markets where resellers struggle.
  • Alphanumeric sender IDs, so messages arrive from your brand name rather than a random number in the countries that permit it.
  • Competitive per-message pricing against the larger US-centric providers.
  • Delivery receipts detailed enough to tell a rejection from a handset being switched off.

What you need before connecting

  • A Vonage API account with credit on it.
  • Your API key and API secret, both on the Vonage dashboard.
  • A sender: either a number you have bought, or an alphanumeric sender ID.
  • For US destinations, a registered 10DLC brand and campaign. See 10DLC registration for WordPress SMS.

Connecting Vonage to WordPress

  1. Open the WP SMS gateway settings and select Vonage from the list.
  2. Enter your API key and API secret.
  3. Set the sender ID. Use international number format, or your brand name if the destination country allows alphanumeric senders.
  4. Save and send a test message to a real handset.

Alphanumeric sender IDs are where most Vonage setups trip. They are accepted in much of Europe, restricted or banned in the US and Canada, and require pre-registration in several countries. If your test lands in one market and silently fails in another, that is the reason. Work through the gateway troubleshooting guide to confirm.

Deliverability notes

Vonage tends to perform well on European and Asian routes and less distinctively in the US, where the 10DLC framework flattens the differences between providers anyway. If most of your customers are American, judge on price and support rather than routing. If they are spread across several countries, Vonage’s direct routes are worth testing against your current provider on real traffic before you switch wholesale.

Pricing is per message and varies sharply by destination country. Pull the current rates from Vonage directly rather than budgeting from an average.

Common questions

What is the difference between Vonage and Nexmo?

They are the same product. Nexmo was rebranded as Vonage, so older documentation and plugin listings may still use the Nexmo name.

Why does my brand name work in one country but not another?

Alphanumeric sender IDs are permitted in much of Europe, banned in the US and Canada, and require pre-registration in several other markets. Check the rules per destination.

Can customers reply to my messages?

Only if you send from a purchased number. Alphanumeric senders cannot receive replies, which is worth knowing before you invite one.

Is Vonage a good fit for a US-only audience?

It works, but its routing advantage is strongest outside North America. For US-only traffic, judge on price and support rather than expecting a deliverability difference.
