Chatting with customer support, receiving an appointment reminder, messaging a driver, video conferencing with your doctor: what do these have in common?

Twilio powers all of these communications, Voice and SMS marketing and more.

So, what exactly is Twilio?

Twilio is an API that allows developers to send text messages from their applications. It works by sending HTTP requests to a web server, which then sends the message to the recipient.

The Twilio service has two main components:

A RESTful interface for managing your account and resources

An application programming interface, used to programmatically create and manage SMS messages on behalf of users in real time.

To use this library you need to have a valid Twilio Account with credit available.

If you want to build a simple app that lets people send each other text messages, Twilio is the way to go. In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to set up a basic application using Twilio.

Twilio SMS API

The Twilio SMS API is a web service that allows you to create and send text-based communications through your application or website. The API provides an easy way for developers to integrate messaging into their applications without having to build it from scratch. You can use the API in conjunction with our other APIs such as Voice, Video Chat and Messaging.

To get started using the API, first sign up at Once signed up, click “Create New Project” and select “Web”. Enter a project name and choose one of three templates. Click Next Step. On the next page enter your phone number and email address. Then click Create Your First App. This will take you to the dashboard where you can see all of your apps created so far. If you are new to Twilio, check out these tutorials to help you understand what’s going on under the hood.

Once you’ve got everything setup, let’s start coding!

Getting Started With Twilio

Here you should find a URL called Message_URL. Copy this value and paste it back here when prompted later. We’re also going to be needing some credentials – username and password. These values must match those provided during registration. Make sure you save both the Username and Password fields.

What can be done with a Twilio phone number?

There are many different ways that developers can use the numbers they get from us. But the two basic products that fuel the majority of uses cases on Twilio are voice and messaging communications.

How to: Use additional Twilio services

In addition to the examples shown here, Twilio offers web-based APIs that you can use to leverage additional Twilio functionality from your Azure application. For full details, see the Twilio API documentation

The Twilio Credit can be applied to any Twilio usage ($10 credit equivalent to sending as many as 1,000 SMS messages or receiving up to 1000 inbound Voice minutes, depending on the location of your phone number and message or call destination).

This service lets users buy their own Twilio credit so that there is no cost to you, the developer, for their Twilio usage.
